Center for Broadcast Journalism (CBJ), a Minnesota nonprofit dedicated to transforming media to better reflect the diverse communities they serve, is looking for an ambitious reporter to lead its news reporting online and on our radio station POWER104.7FM.

About the Job:

We’re looking for a motivated, self-starting journalist grounded in the experiences of communities of color in the Twin Cities. Such a reporter ideally has no problem identifying enterprise stories that other news outlets are failing to cover. They have excellent time-management skills, and are comfortable working with a daily deadline. Because CBJ is a relatively new organization, they will have the opportunity to help shape the editorial vision of the newsroom. They have a strong sense of personal ethics, and are not afraid of getting into “good trouble."

Relevant skills:

Excellent writing and reporting skills

Excellent organizational and multitasking skills

Minimum 2 years of reporting experience

Strong communication and interpersonal skills

Ability to thrive while working around tight deadlines

Proficient audio editing

Proficient use of photos and video for the purpose of storytelling

Proficient use of social media for both gathering and distributing news

Schedule:

This is a full-time position with variable hours, including some nights, weekends and holidays. We expect flexibility, and are committed to being flexible in return.

We know there are great candidates who might not check all these boxes or who have important skills we haven’t listed. Don’t hesitate to apply and tell us about yourself.

We are also an educational institution, and offer regular classes with experienced professionals in the field. Our reporters are encouraged to attend all of our education courses, at no cost to themselves.

About Us:

CBJ is dedicated to transforming media by empowering Black and brown storytellers to authentically amplify what's happening in our communities. Our newsroom covers the stories that matter most to those who have been historically marginalized. Our community radio station POWER 104.7FM provides culturally authentic programming while also serving as a platform for our newsroom. Through our education program, we're making media accessible for early career journalists of color by removing barriers and equipping them with the knowledge and skills needed to excel in the journalism industry.

Our stories are changing the narrative for Black and brown communities by giving voice to those often ignored by mainstream media, by amplifying current events that are culturally significant, and by using journalism as a form of accountability for the systems that cause harm to communities of color. We are advancing racial equity in journalism by removing barriers to enter the field with our full-time professional positions. And we provide education that helps early-career journalists find their voice by empowering them to report through the lens of their cultural experience.

We’re committed to maintaining a healthy work-life balance and providing a place for staff to feel supported in their professional growth while helping them achieve ambitious goals.

To apply, please submit a resume, cover letter and 3-5 examples of your work to marianne@centerforbroadcastjournalism.org. The application deadline is Jan 15, 2023.
